Knows and Lives from the Scriptures
The Bible has always been central to the life of the Christian Church. Jesus was profoundly shaped by the scriptures as were the men and women who became his followers. The ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts, full of stories, songs, prophecies and wisdom, permeated the family and community life of his day. The earliest Christians searched the Hebrew scriptures to see if the things about Jesus as Messiah were true. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, a number of them authored the sacred texts that became the New Testament. By the early second century many of the early Christian writings had been collected and given the same reverence as the Hebrew Bible, and by the fourth century the canon of the Old and New Testaments was completed.
Ever since then, the Bible has guided believers in the ways of the triune God and of the advance of God's kingdom on earth through the Lord Jesus Christ. The inspiration, authority and reliability of the Bible has been held by the majority of Christians over the centuries.
Serious followers of Christ are serious about handling the Word of God accurately. They know how to read it, study it, talk about, it and pass it on to others. They understand the truth and sufficiency of the Word for the whole of life.
